Santa Claus (versus the devil)
A bizarre flick from Mexico translated by K. Gordon Murray for children's matinees, in which Santa Claus is the envy of the CIA and avoids child labor laws by keeping his slaves in an orbital castle over the North Pole. Currently #44 on IMDB's Bottom 100 of worst films, beating out "Santa Claus Conquers the Martians" by a wide margin. From everything I've heard, it's PD in Mexico, too, so the GATT monster didn't get this one!

The General Line (Eng)
This is the same "The General Line" that appears elsewhere on the archive but I have added English inter titles which make it much more accessible. Directed by Sergei Eisenstein and released in 1929, while not one of Eisenstein's best films (it was recut for political reasons and later resored).) it is a lovely portrait of Russian peasant life during the transition from human to mechanized labor.

Welding The Big Ring (Standard 4:3) - American Mutoscope And Biograph Company
This long clip shows the entire process of welding a large piece of metal before the advent of the industrial electric welder. Notice the forge and the foreman overseeing the work. Check out the muscles on those guys. Many of them are probably recent immigrants. It seem incredible that the average weekly wage for such hard labor was $3 to $5. The shot was made at the Westinghouse plant where electric generators were made...

The Building of 'CONNY' -- Life-Size Sperm Whale Model - Robbins Barstow
In 1975, Connecticut made the sperm whale its official state animal, as a symbol of conservation. The following year, a group of volunteers from the Connecticut Cetacean Society spent over 5,000 hours building a life-size, 60-foot, ferro-cement model of a male sperm whale, on the grounds of the Children's Museum in West Hartford, Connecticut, USA. Director of the project was Robbins Barstow, who filmed this dramatic, home-made documentary.

Here is Germany
Here is Germany was made to prepare soldiers who had not seen combat to go to Germany for the US occupation after the May 8, 1945 unconditional surrender. The film was, however, never used for its intended purpose. Here is Germany was a 1945 propaganda documentary film directed by Frank Capra. Like its companion film, Know Your Enemy: Japan, the film is a full-length exploration of why one of the two major Axis countries started World War II and what had to be done to keep them from "doing it ag...

Strike was directed in 1925 by Sergai Eisenstein. It was Esienstein's first feature film and an indicator of the brilliant films t follow. As with other Communist films of this period, the workers in general are the heroes. The composition and editing are spectacular, particularly with the scenes as the troop raid the apartment buildings, and the conclusion where the killing of the workers is intercut with the slaughter of cattle.

For The Term of His Natural Life - Norman Dawn
This is the greatest of all Austrlian Silent films. Made just before the advent of synchronised sound, this film had a limited period of commercial viabilty before it dissapeared from sight. Based on the serialised novel by Marcus Clarke, this was the most expensive film produced in Australia at the time. It costed 50,000 pounds when the average Australian film was made for around 1000 pounds. The film stars George Fisher as Richard Devine/Rufus Dawes/John Rex and Eva Novak as Sylvia Vickers and...
